Millimeter-wave technology was initially developed for military purposes and saw rapid development after World War II. Millimeter waves refer to electromagnetic waves in the frequency range of 30 to 300 GHz, with wavelengths ranging from 1 to 10 mm. Millimeter-wave radar, operating in the millimeter-wave band, combines some advantages of microwave radar and electro-optical radar.
Compared to ultrasonic radar, millimeter-wave radar has the characteristics of small size, light weight, and high spatial resolution. Compared to optical sensors such as infrared, laser, and cameras, millimeter-wave radar has strong penetration capabilities through fog, smoke, and dust, and it operates in all weather conditions and at all times. Additionally, millimeter-wave seekers have better anti-interference and anti-stealth capabilities compared to other microwave seekers. As a result, millimeter-wave radar is widely used in various fields such as automotive, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), 5G communications, satellite remote sensing, and intelligent transportation.
Application fields of millimeter-wave radar:
Currently, the available frequency bands for millimeter-wave radar are 24 GHz, 60 GHz, 77 GHz, and 79 GHz, with 24 GHz and 77 GHz being the mainstream bands.
24 GHz millimeter-wave radar was the first to be used in civilian applications. It has mature performance in all aspects and relatively low cost. On the other hand, 77 GHz started later and has greater room for improvement in terms of cost control and performance. In the automotive field, 77 GHz, with its performance advantages, will gradually replace 24 GHz in the future. In fact, many countries and regions have already allocated this frequency band as a dedicated band for automotive use. However, in other fields such as intelligent transportation, smart homes, security, smart appliances, and intelligent bathrooms, 24 GHz will still be highly sought after, bringing unprecedented convenience to people's lives.
