Circuit boards feature various types of holes drilled into them, and today we are focusing on Plated-through Metal Core PCB technology.

 

In through-hole technology, component leads are inserted through designated openings in the PCB to mount the components. These holes, which traverse from one side of the board to the other, are known as through-holes. When a Plated-through Metal Core PCB is used, a thin layer of copper is applied to the inner walls of these holes, making the entire area conductive. This copper plating enables seamless electrical connection between components and copper tracks on the PCB. The added conductivity improves mechanical stability, reduces resistance, and supports smooth current flow throughout the system.

 

The Plated-through Metal Core PCB typically features a minimum copper plating thickness of around 15 µm or less, ensuring reliable electrical performance. For double-sided Metal Core boards, the manufacturing process often involves using a copper-clad aluminum substrate as the base material, allowing for both mechanical stability and thermal conductivity, crucial for high-performance applications.

This technology significantly enhances the functionality of PCBs by ensuring robust electrical connections while providing the necessary mechanical integrity and heat dissipation, making Plated-through Metal Core PCBs ideal for demanding environments.
