Product Introduction

For commercial automotive safety systems for braking and collision avoidance, radar technology is no longer just for the military. Modern automotive radar sensors must offer incredibly high reliability while adhering to the financial constraints of the cutthroat commercial vehicular markets. They operate at millimeter wave frequencies( 60 and 77 GHz), which were once thought to be more experimental than practical. These high-frequency radar sensors are frequently made of hybrid printed circuit board( PCB) materials, which combine several different materials to achieve cost- and performance objectives. A set of performance requirements can be met with millimeter-wave radar sensor hybrid PCBs by selecting materials that are within the price range of automotive customers.

A hybrid PCB needs to take into account a number of important material properties, such as the thermal coefficient of Dk( TCDk), moisture absorption, thickness control, and dielectric constant( dk or r) tolerance. Even the type of glass weave used to reinforce a circuit material can affect performance and dependability for automotive radar sensors at frequencies up to 77 GHz.

A material that has been broadly adopted for hybrid multilayer PCBs for automotive sensors at 77 GHz is the F4BM220 laminate from WL Corporation. There are many reasons for this adoption and it makes for a good study to evaluate this material with another contrasting material, to highlight the properties which are critical for these applications.
